IDF Ends Pre-Packaged Meals for Ultra-Orthodox Soldiers, Introduces Fresh Kosher Food

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is replacing pre-packaged, heat-and-serve meals with fresh, diverse kosher food prepared under strict halachic standards for ultra-Orthodox soldiers. This initiative, led by the IDF Chief of Staff's advisor on ultra-Orthodox affairs, aims to improve service conditions and better accommodate the religious lifestyle of soldiers from the Haredi sector. The Logistics Corps and the Supply Center of the Technology and Logistics Directorate developed an updated approach to feeding ultra-Orthodox soldiers, gradually phasing out sealed meal trays (hamagshiyot) previously used for strict kosher consumers.

The new system will expand daily fresh meal offerings at bases, ensuring compliance with stringent kosher laws while respecting soldiers' religious practices. This program is implemented in cooperation with the newly established "Mehadrin and Special Populations Division" within the Military Rabbinate's Kashrut branch, which oversees halachic supervision, procurement policies, infrastructure, and kitchen procedures to guarantee uncompromising kosher standards.

This reform results from a joint effort by the Chief of Staff's ultra-Orthodox advisor, the Military Rabbinate, and the Technology and Logistics Directorate, based on field assessments and feedback from soldiers and commanders. Brigadier General Avinoam Emuna, the Chief of Staff's advisor for ultra-Orthodox affairs, emphasized the commitment to ensuring that ultra-Orthodox soldiers can serve in the IDF while maintaining their lifestyle with dignity and sustainable conditions.
