Republicans Embrace Pro-Israel Democratic Senator John Fetterman Amid Shifting Support

A recent New York Times poll reveals a significant shift in the political support base of Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman, known for his strong pro-Israel stance. Currently, 73% of Republican voters view Fetterman positively, a stark contrast to only 22% support from Democrats in his own party. This marks a dramatic reversal from two years ago when 74% of Democrats supported him compared to just 20% of Republicans.

The poll highlights that Republicans in Pennsylvania now support Fetterman at a higher rate than their own Republican Senator David McCormick, who has 63% backing within his party. Among independent voters, Fetterman enjoys 49% support, showing a stable and slightly increased appeal since the previous survey in May 2024.

The main factor behind the decline in Democratic support is Fetterman’s extensive backing of Israel. Nearly half of Democratic voters believe he supports Israel excessively, with this sentiment strongest among younger Democrats under 30, where 57% express this view. Overall, 29% of Pennsylvania voters think Fetterman is "too pro-Israel," compared to 15% who say the same about the state's Jewish pro-Israel Governor Josh Shapiro.

Despite the partisan shift, Fetterman maintains a steady overall approval rating of 46% among all Pennsylvania voters, nearly unchanged from 48% two years ago. His firm base remains among independents, where his support has grown slightly. This polling data underscores a unique political realignment influenced by Fetterman’s foreign policy positions and highlights the evolving dynamics within the Democratic Party and across the political spectrum in Pennsylvania.
