Toronto Police Investigate Academic for Anti-Semitic Speech at Jewish Community Rally

The story · English

Toronto police have launched a hate crime investigation following inflammatory remarks made by Abbas Hamza, an academic lecturer in Ontario, during an anti-Israel rally held in the heart of Toronto's Jewish community. Video footage circulated on social media and reported by the Canadian Anti-Semitism Movement shows Hamza making severe anti-Semitic allegations against Jews and Zionists, including accusations of practicing "black magic" and consuming children. He also referred to Israel as a "false Zionist state" established by colonialists and claimed Jews were expelled from various countries due to their actions.

Israeli Consul General in Toronto, Edit Shamir, condemned Hamza's statements on her X (formerly Twitter) account, labeling them as blood libels dating back to the Middle Ages. She noted that such demonstrations occur every Sunday near synagogues and schools. Three major Jewish organizations in Canada have called for decisive action against these hate-fueled events. Richard Robertson, research director at B'nai Brith Canada, denounced the public incitement and urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable.

Additionally, reports reveal that Hamza has previously expressed support for Hamas kidnappings and Hezbollah assistance. Local police provide security at the protests involving Hamza to maintain public order. The investigation is ongoing as community leaders seek measures to prevent further hate speech and protect the Jewish population in Toronto.
