West Nile Virus Mosquitoes Detected Across Israel, Health Ministry Issues Urgent Warning

The story · English

The Israeli Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environmental Protection have confirmed the capture of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in three regional councils: Emek Yizrael in the north, Emek Hefer in the center, and Sha'ar HaNegev in the south. Since the start of the disease season, 17 cases have been diagnosed nationwide, including one death and one patient still hospitalized. Most patients exhibited typical symptoms such as fever, rash, and altered consciousness. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing to identify possible exposure sites.

In response, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has instructed all local authorities, especially those where infected mosquitoes were found, to immediately intensify prevention, monitoring, public education, and mosquito control efforts to reduce public health risks. The summer season, characterized by hot and humid weather and standing water, creates ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

Authorities emphasize that while local governments are responsible for managing public areas, the public plays a crucial role in prevention. Residents are urged to drain standing water from containers like buckets, flowerpot trays, old tires, gutters, and barrels. Personal protection measures include using approved mosquito repellents containing active ingredients such as DEET, installing window and door screens, wearing long light-colored clothing during evening and night hours, and using fans to deter mosquitoes.

Residents are also encouraged to report mosquito nuisances or standing water in public spaces to municipal hotline 106 for prompt action. Prof. Sigal Sadetzki, head of the Public Health Division at the Ministry of Health, explained that West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites from infected birds. While usually mild or asymptomatic, severe cases involving encephalitis or meningitis can occur, particularly in people over 60 or those with underlying health conditions.

Dr. Shay Reicher, director of the Pest Control and Eradication Department at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, noted that infected mosquitoes have been caught recently at multiple sites across the country, indicating nationwide presence. The ministry has issued detailed instructions to local authorities to act without delay and urged the public to assist by eliminating breeding sites and reporting hazards promptly.
