Following a 0-0 draw between Maccabi Netanya and Bnei Sakhnin, two Sakhnin players, Iyad Abu Abid and Ilai Hajaj, were assaulted in their car by a small group of Netanya fans. The incident occurred immediately after the match, with Hajaj's pregnant wife also present in the vehicle. Both players are expected to provide statements to the police regarding the attack.
Maccabi Netanya quickly issued an official statement condemning the violence, describing the actions as "beyond any accepted norm" and not reflective of the club's loyal fan base. The club emphasized that those responsible acted against the values and sportsmanship it upholds, and that such behavior harms the club, the spirit of sport, and the wider fan community.
Abu Abid, who previously played for Netanya, expressed his disgust on social media, highlighting the need for police protection to feel safe. Hajaj also shared his shock, noting the attack damaged his car and endangered his pregnant wife, questioning how such violence could occur simply after a football match. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for accountability within Israeli football circles.
