The story · English

On the first anniversary of Rabbi Shneor Katz's passing, Rabbi Michael Broom and Rabbi Simcha Stettner delivered eulogies highlighting his joy in serving God, deep Torah scholarship, and dedication to others. Rabbi Broom, president of Yeshivat Shiloh and Midrasha Binet, emphasized Rabbi Katz's wholehearted humility and intense commitment to Torah study, describing him as a serious scholar who immersed himself fully in every topic. He noted Rabbi Katz's upbringing in a devout home and praised how he maximized every moment for divine service with pure intentions.

Rabbi Broom also acknowledged Rabbi Katz's role in founding educational institutions alongside his brothers Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Simcha, including a high school yeshiva, a higher yeshiva, and a girls' seminary. He expressed hope for continued growth in Torah and Hasidut within these institutions as a legacy of Rabbi Katz.

Rabbi Stettner, head of the higher yeshiva and president of Nachalat Yisrael institutions in Migdal HaEmek, reflected on Rabbi Katz's selflessness and humility, recounting stories from students and family published in a commemorative book. He shared a personal memory of Rabbi Katz's disregard for personal honor and described visiting his gravesite to report on the yeshiva's progress, including new buildings and growth in quality and quantity.

Rabbi Stettner stressed that the yeshiva's future success depends primarily on Torah study and spiritual devotion, urging students to uphold these values as the foundation for both spiritual and material success. He concluded that all strength and power come from learning and cleaving to God, underscoring the responsibility on the students to maintain the yeshiva's holiness and growth.

The commemorations took place on the 10th of Elul, 5786 (2023), marking a year since Rabbi Katz's death, celebrating his lasting impact on Torah education and community life.
