France Pushes New Rules for Aesthetic Medicine Advertising as Israel Faces Similar Challenges

The story · English

France has initiated a regulatory discussion aimed at setting new rules for advertising and marketing aesthetic surgeries and treatments to protect the public from misleading information, minimize medical risks, and prevent encouraging minors to undergo such procedures. The proposed decree outlines conditions under which advertising may be deemed unfair, harmful to public health, or inducive for minors to seek plastic and aesthetic surgery services.

This move reflects a broader transformation in the aesthetic medicine field, which has become more accessible and popular in recent years. The boundary between medical information and marketing has blurred, with many patients now beginning their journey through social media rather than direct consultation with a physician. Influencer endorsements, before-and-after photos, and promotional campaigns often present aesthetic treatments as ordinary consumer products, potentially downplaying the medical risks involved.

While increased access to medical information can empower patients to make informed decisions, challenges remain in ensuring that the information is accurate, balanced, and responsible. Even common procedures like injections require personalized medical assessment and professional expertise. Marketing often highlights only the positive outcomes without adequately addressing suitability, risks, limitations, or realistic expectations.

As the aesthetic medicine market grows and competition intensifies, establishing clear rules is essential not to restrict growth but to ensure responsible development. With algorithms shaping perceptions of beauty, the medical community's responsibility increases. Professor Yossi Hayek, chairman of the Israeli Association of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, emphasizes the need for Israel to engage in serious dialogue on regulating this expanding market to maintain public trust, quality information, and professional standards. Sustainable growth depends on competition based on professionalism, quality, and transparency rather than marketing prowess alone.
