The New York Knicks captured the NBA championship on Sunday, ending a 53-year title drought with a dramatic 94-90 road win over the San Antonio Spurs. The victory sealed the Finals 4-1 and gave New York its third championship in franchise history.
Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 45 points and sparked the comeback from a 16-point deficit. New York did not take its first lead since the opening quarter until only three minutes remained, after a tense fourth quarter that stayed close throughout.
The title is the Knicks’ first since 1973, following previous championships in 1970 and 1973. The team has also reached two other Finals since then, losing to San Antonio and the Houston Rockets, and for years has been regarded as one of the league’s biggest disappointments.
