Tensions in the Gaza Strip are escalating as the Israeli military increases its operations and Hamas intensifies diplomatic efforts with mediating countries. According to Israeli security sources, Hamas is pushing these mediators to publicly accuse Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement. Over the weekend, Hamas heightened pressure on the mediators to issue statements condemning Israel.
Israeli defense officials believe Hamas has two main objectives: to halt the anticipated disarmament of the group within Gaza and to justify escalating attacks against Israeli forces operating inside the Strip. Concurrently, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have stepped up airstrikes in Gaza. On Saturday, an IDF airstrike killed a Hamas platoon commander involved in tunnel infrastructure restoration in Deir al-Balah, beyond the so-called "yellow line."
On Friday, two additional incidents occurred where Hamas operatives crossed the yellow line; one was killed by a Givati Brigade unit, and another was captured by forces from the 99th Division and handed over to the Shin Bet for interrogation. Meanwhile, four incendiary balloons were detected in Israeli communities near Gaza, with security officials attributing them to Hamas. Although children or teenagers physically launch these balloons, Hamas orchestrates the activity to gather intelligence and test Israel's response.
Residents in the Gaza border communities have been instructed to avoid approaching suspicious objects due to fears the balloons could be used to deliver explosives. Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council head warned that tolerance of these incidents signals Hamas to continue provocations. Israeli authorities have not yet responded to the balloon launches. Security sources told Channel 12 that the balloons, attached to long strings, are used to collect drone intelligence ahead of potential larger attacks, and Israel will continue preemptive actions against those responsible.
