Maccabi Haifa began their 2026/27 Israeli Premier League season on August 22 with a 2-1 victory over Hapoel Ramat Gan, highlighted by a brace from Baroni. Coach Barak Bachar praised Baroni's performance, noting his aggression and near hat-trick, while acknowledging the team still has much work ahead. Bachar described the club environment as a "house of madness," emphasizing the unique pressure where Toto Cup results heavily influence perceptions.

Bachar explained that the team’s defensive and offensive play improved compared to recent matches, and the tactical switch to a 5-3-2 formation helped regain control late in the game. He also addressed the need to reconsider player acquisitions following Benson's injury but stressed the immediate focus is on winning the next match and team cohesion.

Regarding upcoming challenges, Bachar acknowledged the difficulty of facing Maccabi Tel Aviv away, calling them a strong and energetic team. He also reflected on the match against former player Masai Dago, expressing satisfaction with the team's preparation and victory.

Defender Nigel Lundwijk, in his first Israeli interview, expressed his commitment to winning and ambition for the season. He shared positive impressions of Israel and the warm reception he has received since arriving, despite initial concerns discussed with his family.

The season opener victory sets a positive tone for Maccabi Haifa, but the coaching staff remains cautious about squad changes and the long road ahead in the league.
