The US is escalating sanctions against Iran to block its $110 billion oil revenue network, focusing on Chinese buyers, UAE-based intermediaries, and Iran’s shadow shipping fleet. The campaign aims to pressure Iran economically and politically, relying heavily on UAE cooperation amid Iranian retaliations. Success could significantly damage Iran’s economy and force it to negotiate with the US.

  • US targets Iran’s $110 billion oil revenue through intensified sanctions on buyers and intermediaries.
  • Chinese banks and buyers financing Iranian refineries are primary US targets.
  • Financial intermediaries in the UAE convert Iranian yuan to usable currencies for Tehran.
  • Broad secondary sanctions pressure foreign firms to choose between Iran and US financial access.
  • US aims to disrupt Iran’s shadow fleet and oil export infrastructure supporting illicit trade.
  • UAE’s cooperation is crucial; it suspended ties with Iran after Iranian attacks and ship seizure.

The United States, under former President Donald Trump’s renewed strategy, is intensifying sanctions against Iran to cut off the regime’s primary revenue source: oil exports. The campaign, announced on August 21, 2026, targets four main areas: Chinese buyers and banks financing Iranian oil refineries, financial intermediaries especially in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) converting Iranian yuan earnings into usable currencies, broad secondary sanctions pressuring foreign companies to choose between doing business with Iran or accessing the US financial system, and the so-called "shadow fleet" including ships, companies, ports, and infrastructure supporting Iranian oil exports.

Iran currently channels much of its oil exports and revenues through Iraq, Turkey, and the UAE. In Iraq, Iranian oil is mixed with Iraqi oil and sold as Iraqi crude, with proceeds returned to Iran in cash. The US recently disrupted part of this network by arresting Iraqi officials. However, the UAE remains the core hub for Iran’s illicit oil trade and financial operations, involving about 50 intermediaries linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran’s intelligence ministry. These intermediaries operate numerous companies and vessels under sanctions but continue to facilitate oil shipments and money laundering, often using Turkish bank accounts to obscure financial trails.

Iran’s Foreign Minister dismissed the US campaign as a distraction from America’s internal crises, warning that doubling down on failed policies would only provoke more hostility. The success of the US sanctions depends heavily on the UAE’s cooperation, which has already suspended trade and financial relations with Iran following Iranian missile attacks and the seizure of a UAE ship. Further Iranian retaliations are expected if the UAE continues to collaborate with the US.

If Washington and Abu Dhabi maintain their pressure, the sanctions could severely cripple Iran’s economy, potentially more than previous US measures or limited military strikes. The campaign aims to force Iran to accept US demands in any future negotiations. The complex US-China relations leave China’s role uncertain, pending official confirmation of its inclusion in the sanctions.

This intensified sanctions effort follows recent Iranian protests linked to corruption and mismanagement of oil revenues, highlighting the regime’s vulnerability. The US hopes that cutting off Iran’s oil income at its financial heart in the UAE will have decisive economic and political consequences for Tehran.
