Tom Barrett, former US envoy to Syria and ambassador to Turkey, suggested in an interview that Israel's unusual strike in Syria this week might have been intended to provoke a Turkish military response. Barrett told content creator Mario Nawfal that one theory is Israel aimed to lure Turkey into action, describing it as an aggressive move possibly timed to influence upcoming elections. He referenced Turkey’s 2015 downing of a Russian plane and noted that election periods can lead to "irrational decision-making." Barrett also said US investigations found no evidence that Turkish forces moved to the targeted military airfield in Syria, as Israel claimed.
The incident has further strained Israeli-Turkish relations, with Turkey escalating tensions by requesting Interpol to issue a Red Notice against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged genocide related to the Gaza flotilla incident. Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek stated this follows a July 14 arrest warrant and is part of ongoing legal proceedings in Turkey. The Turkish statement accused Netanyahu’s government of crimes against humanity and vowed not to allow impunity for those responsible for alleged offenses in Gaza.
In response, Israeli spokesperson Doron Shpilman released a video framing the Syrian strike as a preemptive measure to prevent Turkish military entrenchment near Israel’s border. Shpilman highlighted Turkey’s significant military presence in Syria, controlling about 5% of Syrian territory compared to Israel’s roughly 0.1% in southern Syria, which faces threats from Hezbollah, ISIS, and other terrorist groups. He emphasized that Turkey, which faces no direct threat, holds an area more than 50 times larger than Israel’s foothold in Syria.
The developments underscore rising tensions between Israel and Turkey amid complex regional dynamics, with potential implications for broader Middle East stability.
