Severe disruptions and flight delays at Ben Gurion Airport during one of the busiest travel periods were preceded by internal warnings about a potential strike in mid-August. About a year ago, during a recruitment process for the airport's Deputy Communications Director, candidates were asked how they would handle a sudden strike by the workers' union at the height of the tourist season. This scenario was acknowledged internally by the Israel Airports Authority (IAA), indicating some level of preparedness for such an event.

Despite this, thousands of passengers faced long delays and operational difficulties. The chairman of the IAA workers' union, Pinchas Idan, recently warned of significant staff shortages, estimating a deficit of around 400 employees and ongoing recruitment challenges. He predicted long queues and operational strain throughout August. Idan also revealed that the authority had recently dismissed approximately 250 temporary workers from operational units, exacerbating the manpower shortage.

Senior officials in the IAA criticized Idan, accusing him of acting selfishly and disregarding the impact on workers and travelers. Meanwhile, Idan refrained from officially declaring a strike but attributed the crisis to prolonged employee burnout and insufficient staffing. He stated that he had alerted Transportation Minister Merav Reggev as early as June about the critical situation and called for urgent recruitment to meet peak season demands. The IAA management had previously denied the union's claims, but the current disruptions reflect the severity of the staffing crisis.

The ongoing situation at Ben Gurion Airport highlights the challenges of managing peak travel periods amid labor disputes and workforce shortages, with no immediate resolution announced.
