  • Ben Gurion Airport halted flights for two hours amid severe operational chaos on a peak travel day.
  • Over 100,000 passengers and 600+ flights were affected by delays and baggage handling stoppages.
  • Netanyahu warned disruptors would be sent home, affirming airport operations must continue.
  • Transportation Minister Regev ordered legal action against the workers' union for an alleged illegal strike.
  • Workers’ union blamed chronic understaffing and management failures for the crisis.
  • Opposition leader Eizenkot condemned government mismanagement and absence of leadership at the airport.

After nearly two hours of unprecedented disruption at Ben Gurion Airport, including a halt to landings and takeoffs, operations have gradually resumed with flights rescheduled. The airport authority urged passengers to stay in contact with airlines for updates on flight times and possible changes. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded sharply to the chaos on social media, stating, "Ben Gurion will remain open and operate as usual. Anyone who stands in the way will be sent home."

The turmoil occurred during one of the busiest days of the year, with over 100,000 passengers and more than 600 flights affected by severe delays. Check-in counters were ordered to stop passenger processing and baggage handling, causing massive queues, long security lines, and hours-long delays in baggage claim. The airport's sorting system reached full capacity, leaving planes unable to unload luggage and forcing a halt to all registration for upcoming flights. Ground staff and check-in agents were overwhelmed by frustrated travelers, while a shortage of available parking spots for aircraft caused cascading delays for incoming flights.

The Airport Authority blamed the disruptions on deliberate work stoppages by the workers' union and threatened immediate legal action to end the strike. Conversely, the Transportation Workers Union and the Histadrut rejected claims of a sudden strike, attributing the breakdown to chronic understaffing, inadequate summer preparations, and extreme worker fatigue due to excessive overtime. The staffing shortage, estimated at around 400 workers in sorting and transport roles, has been a known issue for months. Temporary workers are routinely dismissed each winter to avoid granting permanent status, resulting in high turnover and reluctance to return during peak seasons.

Transportation Minister Miri Regev announced she instructed the Airport Authority management to petition the labor court to halt the "illegal and violent strike" immediately. Opposition leader Gadi Eizenkot criticized the government’s handling of the crisis, calling it a reflection of "failed management culture, chaos, lack of responsibility, and leadership." He condemned the absence of the transportation minister from the scene and demanded accountable leadership that addresses systemic issues.

The workers’ union chairman, Pinchas Idan, had warned senior officials in June about the impending crisis due to planned layoffs of approximately 250 temporary workers, cautioning that the system would struggle to handle August’s passenger loads. The airport continues to work on restoring normal operations amid ongoing tensions between management and staff.
