A Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court recently ruled that comedian Vladimir Tamarkin must pay 10,000 shekels in damages to a woman he insulted during a Russian-language stand-up performance in Bat Yam last year. During the show, Tamarkin called the woman "fat" and compared her weight to that of a professional boxer, also likening her to his cat. The woman claimed these remarks were humiliating and defamatory.

Tamarkin, 22, denied making the statements, arguing that the woman confused his words with those of other comedians and that attendees expect provocative humor at stand-up events. However, Judge Tzipora Ohana Kafesh found the woman's testimony credible and acknowledged that while stand-up comedy often involves coarse language and provocative jokes, there are limits that should not be crossed.

The judge ruled that the comedian's comments about the woman's weight exceeded acceptable boundaries and constituted defamation. The court also noted that the woman had chosen to sit in the front row, where interaction with the performer was more likely, which was considered in determining the compensation amount. Tamarkin was ordered to pay 10,000 shekels, including 4,000 shekels in legal fees, significantly less than the 50,000 shekels initially sought by the plaintiff.
