After more than a decade of planning, delays, and security challenges, Jerusalem is set to inaugurate the first segment of its Green Line light rail on Friday. This new line, known as L3, will connect central Jerusalem to the Malha neighborhood, featuring 12 new stations along a seven-kilometer route. It will intersect with the existing Red Line, making Jerusalem the first Israeli city with a cross-linked light rail network. The Green Line will pass key city hubs including government offices, educational institutions like the Givat Ram campus, the Botanical Garden, Teddy Stadium, Pais Arena, and Malha Mall.

The transportation authorities expect the Green Line to alleviate congestion on the heavily used Red Line, which recently surpassed 4.6 million monthly riders, and offer a faster, more convenient alternative to private cars. Initially, trains will run every 12 to 15 minutes, with plans to increase frequency to every 8 to 10 minutes during peak hours after the trial period. However, despite the new station near Teddy Stadium and Pais Arena, it will be closed during major sports events and concerts due to security and crowd management concerns, directing passengers to nearby stations like Malha Mall.

The project faced numerous setbacks, including delays caused by the "Sword of Iron" conflict, ongoing security tensions, and shortages of labor and equipment. In the northern section near Bar Ilan, disturbances and vandalism by extremist groups have caused damage estimated in the hundreds of millions of shekels, further delaying progress. Nonetheless, the Ministry of Transportation and the city’s transportation team remain optimistic, viewing this launch as the first step toward completing a comprehensive light rail network connecting neighborhoods, government centers, workplaces, educational institutions, and cultural venues across Jerusalem. If no last-minute changes occur, the Green Line will officially begin operations this Friday, marking a significant milestone in Jerusalem’s public transportation revolution.
