Israeli Police Officer Convicted for Reckless Shooting of Handcuffed Civilian at Gas Station

The District Court accepted an appeal by the Police Investigations Department and convicted Police Chief Inspector Ohad Goldberg of recklessness and negligence after he accidentally shot and injured a civilian at a gas station in Emek Hefer. Goldberg claimed he believed the civilian was a robber. The incident, revealed by Channel 13 news, involved Goldberg holding a loaded M-16 rifle with his finger on the trigger while attempting to handcuff the suspect, who was lying face down with hands behind his head. The initial trial court sentenced Goldberg to 100 hours of community service, supervision, and a 5,000 shekel fine without a criminal conviction. However, the Police Investigations Department appealed, arguing the shooting demonstrated serious negligence and a deviation from expected police standards, potentially sending a lenient message about firearm use. The District Court agreed, emphasizing that officers must maintain professionalism and restraint even in risky situations.

Goldberg is the son of Police Commissioner Boaz Goldberg, head of the Human Resources Division responsible for police promotions. During the investigation, Goldberg was assigned to an evaluation center as part of his promotion process to deputy commissioner. The Central District police expressed shock and harsh criticism internally over the handling of the case, with one officer calling it a "shame and disgrace" and a reflection of current police culture.
