Massive Rodent Infestation Hits Israeli Border Communities Near Gaza

מאת אלון רזניק

The story · English

Residents of Israeli communities bordering the Gaza Strip have been battling an unprecedented surge of mice and rats over the past three months. The rodents are invading homes, damaging property, and even reaching children's beds. One resident from Nir Yitzhak described catching entire families of mice despite setting multiple glue traps, while another reported that some households have removed at least 100 rodents within two days. The infestation is widespread across all border settlements, with thousands of rodents causing extensive destruction to insulation, electrical wiring, and food supplies.

The regional council of Eshkol has responded by intensifying pest control efforts, including drone-assisted spraying in open areas and distributing bait boxes to trap rodents. A letter from the council explained that such large-scale intervention is unusual and prompted by numerous complaints from local kibbutzim. The council is coordinating with the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Health, and the IDF to monitor and combat the infestation.

Experts attribute the rodent explosion to several factors: the rodents' high reproductive rates (up to eight litters per month), recent heavy rains increasing food availability, ongoing construction work providing shelter, and the proximity to Gaza, where destruction has created ample hiding places. Professor David Ilan from Tel Aviv University noted that rodents easily cross the short distance from Gaza to Israeli communities, exacerbating the problem.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection confirmed it is supporting local authorities with professional guidance and noted that the infestation is linked to weather conditions, war-related depopulation of villages, and accelerated infrastructure rebuilding. The Ministry of Agriculture is actively assisting farmers with tailored pest control methods to minimize environmental and health impacts. Both ministries emphasize that reducing the rodent population will require sustained, coordinated efforts over time.

Despite the severity, authorities report no unusual health risks to residents so far. However, the infestation has caused trauma among locals, including incidents of rodent bites to children. The Eshkol Regional Council has allocated approximately 1.6 million shekels in 2024 to address pest control in the affected areas and continues to ramp up its response as needed.
