The story · English

A historic and emotional ceremony took place in Hod Hasharon marking the official appointment of Rabbi Erez Elharar as the city's Chief Rabbi. The event was attended by prominent religious leaders including the Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi David Yosef, the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Kalman Maier Bar, members of the Chief Rabbinate Council, other rabbis, the Director-General of the Ministry of Religious Services and Acting Director-General of the Chief Rabbinate Yehuda Avidan, public figures, and local residents. During the ceremony, Rabbi Elharar was presented with ritual objects symbolizing his new role and responsibilities.

Rabbi David Yosef emphasized the significant mission and responsibility Rabbi Elharar now carries, stating that a city rabbi must be accessible to all Jews and communities, fostering unity, providing halachic guidance with love, and embodying the teachings of the sages to be a peacemaker and Torah leader. Rabbi Kalman Maier Bar highlighted the rabbi’s role as a spiritual beacon, likening him to a traditional lantern bearer who illuminates darkness, expressing confidence in Rabbi Elharar’s ability to spread Torah, light, and love throughout Hod Hasharon.

Yehuda Avidan noted that Rabbi Elharar’s appointment reflects the broad support from the entire city, including secular and religious residents alike, praising his inclusive leadership. Addressing protesters outside, Avidan called for unity and brotherhood during the month of mercy and forgiveness. Rabbi Elharar expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and reaffirmed his commitment to serve all residents with love for Torah and the people of Israel.

Rabbi Elharar is a graduate of the Yechaveh Da’at yeshiva, known for his deep Torah knowledge and leadership qualities. The ceremony underscored the importance of his role in strengthening religious services, promoting peace and unity, and representing the voice of Torah in Hod Hasharon.
