Israeli Haredi Commentator Highlights Teacher Shortage and Status Issues in Ultra-Orthodox Education

Senior Haredi commentator Israel Cohen discussed the challenges facing core curriculum education and teacher shortages in the ultra-Orthodox community on Channel 12 News. He noted a recent increase in mathematics and English studies within Haredi schools but emphasized this does not fully address state concerns regarding standardized testing and core curriculum compliance.

Cohen identified a significant shortage of Haredi teachers, particularly in independent and Lithuanian-affiliated institutions. He attributed this not only to low salaries, which he claims are often overstated in public reports, but also to the low social status of teaching within the community. For many young Lithuanian Haredim, transitioning from full-time religious study (kollel) to teaching is seen as less prestigious than continuing advanced religious scholarship or becoming a yeshiva lecturer.

He referenced a recent gathering convened by Torah leader Rabbi Meir Hirsch that focused on encouraging young men leaving kollels to become teachers of young children and religious subjects. Suggestions included elevating the social standing and respect of teachers to make the profession more attractive and even a meaningful mission. Cohen’s remarks highlight that beyond public debates about core curriculum, the Haredi education system faces deeper issues of manpower shortages, compensation, and professional esteem, which concern community leadership.
