Haredi Rabbis Call for Teacher Pay Raise and Educator Recruitment Amid Staffing Crisis

Hundreds of Haredi Talmud Torah principals and community rabbis gathered last weekend for an emergency meeting to address the severe shortage of quality educators in the ultra-Orthodox sector. Leading the assembly were prominent Lithuanian community leaders Rabbi Dov Lando and Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, who proposed a series of measures aimed at reforming the teaching profession's status and improving teacher salaries.

Rabbi Lando criticized the common perception of teaching as merely a job or source of income, emphasizing it as a vital mission and foundation for the next generation. He urged suitable young people to join the education system, called on donors worldwide to increase financial support for teachers, and appealed to institution leaders to act in full unity and coordinate with government authorities rather than independently.

Rabbi Hirsch presented a practical three-step plan to resolve the crisis, which he attributed to administrators currently having to employ insufficiently qualified staff. His proposal includes appointing a dedicated project manager to enhance salary conditions and secure donor grants, establishing an official professional union to organize training and seminars for teachers, and instructing Haredi media to highlight success stories of educators to elevate the profession's prestige among the public.
