Leading Rabbi Emphasizes Equal Importance of Cheder Teachers and Yeshiva Heads in Torah Education

An emergency gathering of prominent Torah scholars took place last Friday night in Bnei Brak to address the severe shortage of qualified teachers in cheders, especially for lower grades. The meeting included notable rabbis such as Rabbi David Lando, Rabbi Moshe Hirsch, Rabbi David Segal, Rabbi Chaim Feinstein, Rabbi Shmuel Shteinman, Rabbi Shmuel Galai, and Rabbi Baruch Finkel.

During the conference, Rabbi Chaim Feinstein, head of a yeshiva, highlighted the critical role of cheder teachers, stating that their Torah instruction is no less significant than that of yeshiva heads and rabbis who teach Talmudic oral law. He explained that while yeshiva leaders teach the oral Torah, cheder teachers impart the written Torah, making them an integral link in the unbroken chain of Torah transmission from generation to generation. Rabbi Feinstein also noted that the special halachic laws concerning mourning, which apply to those who teach others, extend to cheder teachers as well.

He urged families and community leaders to recognize the importance and sacred mission of cheder teachers. The meeting underscored the urgent need to support and value these educators to ensure the continuity of Torah learning among young students.
