President Donald Trump said on Sunday evening that the United States has reached an agreement with Iran in ongoing negotiations and that it will be signed immediately. He made the claim in a series of posts on X, his first public comments on progress in the talks.
In his remarks, Trump attacked Senator Jack Reed, saying Reed had lied in describing the new arrangement as worse than the Obama-era JCPOA. Trump wrote that Reed was either "a complete crook" or "incapable," and again denounced the JCPOA as a path to a nuclear weapon for Iran that also included cash payments.
Trump said the Obama deal was one of the worst and most foolish agreements ever made by the United States. By contrast, he said the new deal is "a fortress" that will prevent Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon, calling it the exact opposite of Obama’s agreement.
The president also spoke on Sunday evening with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and informed him that there was an agreement with Iran. The article does not provide further details on the terms of the deal or when the signing is expected to take place beyond Trump’s statement that it would happen immediately.
