Religious Zionism's Simcha Rothman Eyes Justice Minister Role to Complete Judicial Reform

The story · English

Following his second-place finish in the Religious Zionism party primaries and securing the third spot on the Knesset list, MK Simcha Rothman has set completing the judicial reform as a key goal for the next government. In an interview with Channel 7, Rothman did not rule out serving as Minister of Justice, stating, "I definitely think it should be on the table. I have work to do there." He emphasized that any role allowing him to fix the judicial system is important.

Rothman rejected claims that the reform stalled due to protests and the October 7 attacks, asserting it continued progressing throughout the current term. He cited legislative achievements such as the legal advisor opinion bill, changes to the judicial selection committee, repeal of the reasonableness clause, and the override bill’s first reading. He also highlighted laws addressing public complaints against judges, combating incitement to terror, and enabling the death penalty for terrorists.

On the political front, Rothman stressed the Religious Zionism party’s tangible achievements across settlements, the judiciary, economy, and development in the Negev and Galilee, contrasting it with rivals like Naftali Bennett’s party. He described his party as a home for the entire national-religious public, judged by accomplishments rather than campaigns. Regarding a recently revealed plan for reservists, Rothman said the party prepares actionable programs and seeks the authority to implement them.

When asked about running alone or in a coalition in the upcoming elections, Rothman declined to comment, focusing instead on strengthening the party to increase its influence and realize its plans. He expressed hope for less opposition obstruction post-election and a cooperative approach to advancing comprehensive judicial reform without a hostile atmosphere.
