Prof. Boaz Ganor of Reichman University argues that AI is transforming professions and universities must fundamentally change their education models. Beyond adding AI courses, institutions should focus on developing graduates' critical and interdisciplinary thinking to prepare them for a rapidly evolving job market. Israel has a unique chance to lead this educational transformation.

  • AI is transforming nearly every profession, requiring universities to rethink education fundamentally.
  • Future graduates must learn to work with and critically evaluate AI, not just acquire professional knowledge.
  • Traditional teaching models are outdated; professors must now teach critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Curricula must adapt continuously to keep pace with rapid technological changes.
  • Higher education should become a lifelong support system for graduates amid constant professional change.
  • Israel can lead the global reshaping of higher education in the AI era, as it did with cyber technology.

Governments, companies, and universities worldwide are investing billions in artificial intelligence technologies. Many universities have responded by launching new AI programs, expanding research labs, and acquiring AI tools. However, these steps address only part of the challenge. The fundamental question is not how to teach AI, but how universities should evolve in a world where nearly every profession is transforming.

A student starting a degree today will graduate in three to four years, but no one can predict the job market they will enter, including employers. Professions such as law, medicine, economics, engineering, communications, psychology, and management are already integrating AI systems. This trend will only accelerate. Therefore, professional knowledge alone is insufficient. Future graduates must learn to work with AI, critically evaluate it, know when not to rely on it, integrate it into decision-making, and create human value where machines perform much of the work.

The academic challenge is not merely adding courses but shaping the kind of person universities aim to develop. Traditional teaching models are outdated since knowledge is instantly accessible. Professors must now teach critical thinking, skepticism, question formulation, distinguishing reliable information from noise, handling uncertainty, and making complex decisions in a rapidly changing world. Curricula can no longer be updated sporadically; universities must adapt continuously to keep pace with technological advances.

Moreover, a degree can no longer mark the end of learning. In a world of constant professional change, higher education should support graduates throughout their careers. Institutions that wish to lead must rethink teaching philosophies, study structures, labor market connections, and graduate preparation for a fast-evolving world. As AI improves, human advantage will lie in creative, critical, and interdisciplinary thinking, the ability to connect diverse fields and see the bigger picture.

Israel has an opportunity to be among the countries reshaping higher education in the AI era, as it was with the cyber revolution. This requires courage, innovative thinking, and willingness to challenge outdated models. History shows leading institutions are those that anticipate and shape the future rather than merely adapt. The AI revolution offers universities a rare chance to redefine their mission. Those who choose to lead this change will shape the next generation of graduates and the future of higher education, said Prof. Boaz Ganor, President of Reichman University.
