  • The EU postponed ETIAS launch indefinitely, originally planned for early 2027.
  • Fraudulent websites are selling fake ETIAS permits to confused travelers.
  • ETIAS is not currently active; official applications cannot be made yet.
  • ETIAS will cost 20 euros, valid for three years, allowing multiple short stays.
  • Travelers confuse ETIAS with the new biometric Entry/Exit System causing delays.
  • Authorities warn travelers to avoid paying for ETIAS until official launch.

The European Union has postponed the launch of the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), an electronic travel authorization required for visa-exempt travelers, including Israelis, entering 30 European countries such as France and Spain. Originally planned for early 2027, the launch date remains undefined as the EU continues preparations and addresses technical and operational challenges.

Despite ETIAS not yet being operational, numerous fraudulent websites have emerged, deceiving travelers into paying for fake ETIAS permits. The official ETIAS website clearly states the system is not active to prevent such scams. A European Commission spokesperson confirmed that once all conditions are met, a launch date will be announced.

Currently, travelers from visa-exempt countries like Israel, the UK, the US, Canada, and Japan do not need to apply for or pay for ETIAS. When activated, the authorization will cost 20 euros (approximately 80 shekels), be valid for three years or until passport expiration, and allow multiple short stays of up to 90 days within 180 days. Airlines and other transport companies will be required to verify ETIAS approval before boarding.

Aviation expert Anton Redchenko highlighted the confusion caused by repeated delays and stressed that any demand to purchase ETIAS now is a scam. He also noted that travelers often confuse ETIAS with the recently implemented Entry/Exit System (EES), which requires biometric data at EU external borders and has caused significant delays and long queues at airports since its April 10 launch.

The EU is currently managing these border control challenges while warning travelers to remain vigilant against ETIAS-related fraud until the system officially goes live.
