Ben Gurion Airport Faces Significant Delays Due to High Concentration of Landings
Ben Gurion Airport is experiencing significant delays due to an unusual concentration of about 90 landings within three hours, compounded by high summer traffic and European airspace restrictions. The Israel Airports Authority confirmed no staff shortages and urged passenger patience as teams work to manage the overload. Average departure delays reached over an hour for key destinations last week.

The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) announced on Friday morning that Ben Gurion Airport is experiencing unusual delays caused by a high concentration of approximately 90 flights landing within a three-hour window. This surge creates significant operational strain across the airport's entire handling chain, affecting aircraft processing speed, wait times, and baggage unloading.
The IAA attributed the backlog to the typically high summer traffic volumes combined with airspace congestion and restrictions over Europe, particularly Greece, as well as the presence of American refueling flights. Flights that are normally spaced throughout the day are clustering into narrow time frames, reducing parking stand availability and operational flexibility, which increases pressure on ground services.
On the day of the announcement, around 90,000 passengers were expected to pass through Ben Gurion on arriving and departing flights. The combination of heavy traffic, flight clustering, and operational constraints is impacting the entire service chain and may result in delays, including longer wait times for baggage delivery.
Contrary to some reports, the IAA confirmed there is no shortage of staff. They expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers and urged the public to be patient and understanding, emphasizing that all teams are working continuously at full capacity to manage the overload.
According to Ben Gurion's congestion index, average departure delays over the past week reached 62 minutes, with the longest delays on flights to Barcelona (102 minutes), Berlin (89 minutes), and Heraklion, Greece (88 minutes).
