Israeli Nature Authority Urges Safety Measures for Hikers in No-Cellular Zones to Aid Rescues

As the Between the Years period ends, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority (INPA) reviews weeks of dramatic rescue operations amid extreme weather and natural pressures. INPA warns that repeated irresponsibility by hikers, including families, often turns recreational outings into emergency rescues. Many hikers underestimate basic safety rules, risking dehydration, injuries, and heatstroke, with some attempting trails in inappropriate footwear or carrying unsuitable gear like hard suitcases.

The ongoing conflict in northern and southern Israel adds unique dangers, including unexploded ordnance and cliffs, making it critical to stay on marked trails cleared of hazards. INPA spokesperson Mazi Magnagi stresses that deviation from safe paths directly endangers lives. Despite efforts to improve cellular coverage on trails, many areas still lack reception, complicating rescue efforts.

To address this, INPA recommends a simple but often overlooked life-saving tip: leave a note on your vehicle’s window with your group’s details, planned route, and expected return time. This low-tech method enables rescuers to locate missing hikers quickly when mobile communication fails.

INPA also outlines essential safety rules: carry at least 3 liters of water per person in northern regions and 5 liters in southern deserts; select trails matching participants’ fitness and age; wear closed hiking shoes, hats, and protective clothing; start hikes early to avoid peak heat; and check trail statuses via INPA’s website or hotline. Fire lighting is strictly prohibited except in designated areas, and extreme heat may lead to trail closures.

The authority emphasizes that proper preparation, situational awareness, and personal responsibility are vital to ensure safe and healthy returns from nature excursions. The simple note on the car window could be the difference between a swift rescue and a life-threatening delay.
