Europe Experiences Rare Total Solar Eclipse Crossing Continent for First Time Since 2006

מאת כיכר השבת

The story · English

Millions across Europe are witnessing a rare total solar eclipse on Wednesday, the first to cross the continent since 2006. The eclipse begins in the afternoon over Russia, moves across Iceland, and passes over northern Spain before disappearing over the Atlantic Ocean. At its peak, the moon will completely cover the sun, casting a dark shadow on the earth for nearly two minutes in areas within the path of totality.

Northern Spain, including a sunlit path from Oviedo in the west to Mallorca in the east and crossing Burgos north of Madrid, will experience full darkness for about two minutes. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, and animals may show unusual behavior. Elsewhere in Europe, including France and other regions, the eclipse will be partial. Partial views will also be visible in Canada, northern United States, and parts of North Africa.

In Spain, demand for special solar viewing glasses has surged, with shortages reported even on major online retailers. The eclipse coincides with a mystical period, occurring just two weeks before a full lunar eclipse expected on September 7 (7 Elul). Spain, the world's second most popular tourist destination, anticipates the eclipse will boost its economy, especially in rural northern areas affected by decades of deindustrialization. Hotels and tourist sites along the main viewing routes report full occupancy.

This event comes amid a severe heatwave in Europe, making the sudden temperature drop during the eclipse particularly noticeable. The eclipse is also linked in traditional Jewish texts to ominous signs for Israel’s enemies and for other nations. Overall, the eclipse is a significant astronomical and cultural event drawing widespread attention across Europe and beyond.
