Europe to Witness Rare Total Solar Eclipse on August 12 with Partial Views Across Continent
On Wednesday, August 12, a rare total solar eclipse will occur, visible from parts of Spain, Greenland, and Iceland shortly before sunset in Western Europe (20:46 Israel time). The eclipse's totality will last just over two minutes and 18 seconds, serving as a preview for a longer eclipse expected in August 2027, which will last about six and a half minutes and be visible from Spain to North Africa and the Middle East.
The eclipse's path will stretch approximately 8,260 kilometers, mostly over the Atlantic Ocean, with the fullest coverage near Iceland's western coast. Totality will last about one minute over small areas of Portugal and Spain. Partial eclipses will be visible across a wide region including Alaska, Siberia, Canada, northern United States, much of Europe, and West Africa. For example, Dublin will experience 94% coverage, Oslo 83%, Montreal 18%, New York 9%, and Norfolk, Virginia 2%. Special eclipse glasses are essential for safe viewing.
Adding to the celestial spectacle, six neighboring planets will form an arc in the pre-dawn sky, coinciding with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower on the night between Wednesday and Thursday. Michael Zeiler, a leading eclipse mapping expert, will lecture aboard a ship in a Greenland fjord during the event, marking his 13th total eclipse observation. He aims to capture any auroras generated during the eclipse.
The European Space Agency (ESA) will broadcast live from the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory in Spain, while NASA and Italy-based Virtual Telescope Project will also provide coverage. ESA’s Science Director, Professor Karoline Mandl, described the event as both a scientific and deeply human moment, highlighting the cosmic connection it represents.
Research teams from U.S. academic institutions will launch over 60 high-altitude balloons from Spain and Iceland to study atmospheric changes during the eclipse, including temperature drops. Dr. Angela Des Jardins from Montana State University, leading the balloon project funded by NASA, noted that even a few minutes of eclipse can significantly affect the atmosphere.
Looking ahead, a much longer total solar eclipse will occur on August 2, 2027, with up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds of totality visible from southern Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia. Israel will experience an almost total eclipse with increasing sun coverage toward the south. Another rare annular eclipse will follow on January 26, 2028, also visible in Spain, a notable coincidence given Spain’s last total eclipse (excluding the Canary Islands) was just before the Titanic sank in 1912.
