Europe Awaits Rare Total Solar Eclipse on August 12, 2026, Israel Prepares for Major Eclipse in 2027

Europe is eagerly anticipating a rare total solar eclipse set to occur on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. This astronomical event will be visible partially or fully across large parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including Spain, Iceland, and Greenland. Scientists and astronomy enthusiasts worldwide will observe the eclipse, which will last just over 2 minutes and 18 seconds at full coverage. Space agencies plan live broadcasts and atmospheric studies, including launching dozens of balloons to monitor temperature changes during the eclipse.

Israel will not witness the 2026 eclipse, but a much more significant solar eclipse is expected in the region on August 2, 2027. This upcoming event will feature an exceptionally long eclipse lasting up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds, visible across the Middle East and North Africa. In Israel, observers can expect to see an almost total eclipse, with the sun coverage increasing further south.

Experts express excitement about these rare celestial phenomena. Michael Zeiler, a solar eclipse mapping specialist, plans to watch from Greenland and described the event as an opportunity to witness rare phenomena. Professor Karol Mendel, the European Space Agency’s science director, emphasized the human connection to the universe these events foster. NASA-funded researcher Dr. Angela Desjardins highlighted that although the eclipse lasts only a few minutes, it significantly impacts the atmosphere by casting the moon’s dark shadow on Earth.

Alongside the eclipse, six planets will be visible in the sky, coinciding with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, adding to the spectacle for skywatchers.
