Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight with Up to 150 Meteors per Hour

תורגם ותומצת מתוך N12 על ידי baba
The story · English

The Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak late tonight, between August 12 and 13, offering one of the most spectacular celestial displays of the year. This annual event occurs every summer from July 17 to August 24, and this year’s viewing conditions are expected to be ideal. The moon will be near its new phase and set early at 19:30, ensuring dark skies free from lunar light interference. According to the Israeli Space Agency, the meteor rate at peak could reach up to 150 meteors per hour.

The Perseids occur when Earth passes through debris trails left by the Swift-Tuttle comet, which orbits the sun every 133 years. These small particles enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speed, burning up and creating bright streaks of light known as shooting stars. The Perseid meteor shower has been observed for over 2,000 years and is popular for producing bright fireballs. Although Swift-Tuttle was once considered a potential threat due to its orbit near Earth, current estimates place the chance of collision at a minuscule 0.0001% in the year 4479.

The Perseids are notable not only for their high meteor counts, historically exceeding 300 per hour in 1993 and 150 to 200 in 2016, but also for their timing during summer vacation and generally clear weather. Experts recommend watching the shower between 1:00 and 4:00 a.m. from a dark, open location away from city lights, such as a desert area. Observers should allow about 30 minutes for their eyes to adjust to the darkness and avoid looking at phone screens to maintain night vision. Simply reclining and looking up will provide a memorable experience under the night sky.
