Cyprus Seeks Israeli Merkava Tanks Amid Rising Tensions With Turkey

The story · English

Cyprus is interested in purchasing Israeli Merkava Mark 3 and Mark 4 tanks to replace its aging Russian T-80 tanks, amid escalating tensions with Turkey. The island nation declined a Greek offer of 75 to 90 Leopard 1A5 tanks, preferring to advance with Israel due to the Merkava's proven operational capabilities and the close security ties between the two countries. Turkey's recent aggressive actions, including declaring a maritime exclusion zone north of Cyprus and obstructing regional energy projects, have heightened Nicosia's security concerns.

However, Israel remains hesitant to supply the tanks, as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) rely heavily on Merkava tanks for operations in southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials are divided between those supporting the sale to Cyprus and others prioritizing the retention of used tanks for reserve forces. Cyprus insists on acquiring the Merkava tanks, citing the similarity of the island's terrain to Israel's operational environment.

Beyond tanks, Cyprus also aims to strengthen its military with armored vehicles like the EBRC Jaguar, which could be financed through the European Union's SAFE program. This program supports defense purchases up to 150 billion euros, provided that 65% of the procurement comes from EU countries or Ukraine. The tank deal remains uncertain due to Israel's operational needs, but it is part of Cyprus's broader effort to bolster its defense capabilities in response to Turkish provocations.
