The story · English

Cyprus is interested in purchasing Israeli Merkava Mark 3 and Mark 4 tanks to replace its aging Russian T-80 tanks, as tensions with Turkey escalate. The island nation rejected a Greek offer to supply 75-90 Leopard 1A5 tanks, preferring to advance its military capabilities through Israeli equipment, which better suits the terrain and operational needs. Turkey's recent aggressive moves, including declaring a maritime exclusion zone north of Cyprus and obstructing regional energy projects, have heightened security concerns in Nicosia.

Despite Cyprus's interest, Israel remains hesitant to supply the tanks due to the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) operational requirements. The Merkava tanks are extensively used by the IDF in southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, and some Israeli officials argue that retaining used tanks is essential to maintain reserve forces. This internal debate in Israel reflects the balance between supporting an ally and preserving national defense capabilities.

Cyprus also aims to strengthen its military by acquiring EBRC Jaguar armored vehicles, potentially funded through the European Union's SAFE program, which supports defense purchases with conditions favoring EU or Ukrainian suppliers. The Merkava tanks' proven operational record and the close security cooperation between Israel and Cyprus, including the deployment of the Barak MX air defense system, underpin Cyprus's preference for Israeli hardware. However, the final decision depends on Israel's willingness to part with these critical assets amid its own security needs.
