Israeli Parents Warned Against Early Credit Card Use for Children Amid Rising Expenses

The story · English

As the end of August brings increased family expenses and the challenge of entertaining children during summer break, many Israeli parents face pressure from their kids to provide more money than usual. Banks and credit card companies capitalize on this seasonal demand by aggressively marketing financial products aimed at children, often encouraging parents to give their kids credit cards linked to the family account. While teaching children financial responsibility early is beneficial, experts caution that handing over control too soon can lead to loss of parental oversight, financial mismanagement, and even the erosion of childhood innocence.

In the past, families managed children's spending with simple weekly pocket money and parental control during outings, but today’s economic realities, including high living costs and overdraft risks, have complicated this dynamic. Although some banks offer credit cards for children as young as 12 with parental approval, this arrangement shifts financial responsibility to the bank’s terms, leaving parents as secondary parties who may ultimately bear the cost of any debts.

Financial advisors recommend parents hold open family discussions about income and expenses starting around age 10, gradually teaching children about money management and responsible spending. Only after years of guided learning should parents consider giving children access to credit, always remembering that parents remain the primary guarantors for any financial obligations incurred. This cautious approach aims to balance financial education with maintaining parental control and protecting children from premature financial burdens.
