Less than three weeks after the deadly shooting attack near the village of Tal, which claimed the lives of Captain (Res.) Yuval Ezra and Captain (Res.) Benyahu Malat, the Israeli Defense Forces demolished the home of the terrorist responsible. The operation took place overnight on Tuesday in the village of Tal and was led by Battalion 411, where Ezra served as a battery commander. The demolition coincided with what would have been Yuval Ezra's birthday.

The attack occurred near the village of Tal, where the two officers were killed. The IDF operation involved forces from the Shomron Brigade, the elite Yahalom unit, and Border Police fighters from the West Bank. Following the demolition, the IDF stated it will continue proactive counterterrorism efforts throughout Judea and Samaria to bring terrorists to justice.

Last week, the IDF released a command investigation report on the attack. It revealed that the group of hikers had gone out without coordinating or obtaining security approval, despite prior intelligence received hours before the hike. The incident began when lookouts spotted stone-throwing at the hikers, prompting an IDF response led by Ezra and Malat, alongside the security coordinator of the Gilad Farm. They attempted to separate the attackers from the civilians and push them back toward the village.

During the confrontation, after the security coordinator’s weapon was seized, Ezra and Malat acted courageously to protect civilians and neutralize the terrorists. Ezra charged at one attacker and killed him but was killed in the process. The investigation could not conclusively determine whether Malat was killed by terrorist gunfire or friendly fire during the firefight. All terrorists involved were killed or arrested, with two others wounded.

The report also identified operational failures, including insufficient force size relative to the event, difficulties in situational awareness, and delays in dispatching reinforcements and medical teams. A serious failure was noted in that Malat remained wounded on the ground for an extended period, treated only by a civilian medic without military presence. IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir accepted the findings and ordered immediate implementation of the lessons learned. Following the investigation, Malat was posthumously promoted to Captain (Res.) as he was in the process of officer training at the time of his death.
