Experts Reveal Common Mistakes in Sunscreen Application Undermining Skin Protection

The story · English

In Israel, where sun exposure is a daily reality, proper sunscreen use is crucial to protect skin from harmful UV radiation that causes premature aging, pigmentation, wrinkles, and potentially deadly skin cancers. Dermatologist Dr. Meital Heber emphasizes that sunscreen is effective only when chosen correctly, applied generously, and reapplied regularly.

Many people mistakenly apply too little sunscreen, miss exposed areas such as ears and neck, fail to reapply after swimming or sweating, or use expired products that have lost efficacy. Dr. Heber advises applying about 30 milliliters (a shot glass amount) for full body coverage, ideally 20 minutes before sun exposure, and reapplying every two hours or immediately after water exposure. Spray sunscreens should be applied liberally and evenly, avoiding direct facial spraying, especially in children.

Choosing the right sunscreen depends on skin type and lifestyle. SPF 50 with broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection is generally recommended. Lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas suit oily or acne-prone skin, while richer creams benefit dry skin or those on retinoids. Specialized products exist for children, water resistance, makeup compatibility, and sports use. For infants under six months, sun exposure should be avoided entirely, while mineral-based sunscreens are preferred for older children.

Sunscreen alone is insufficient; it should be combined with shade, wide-brimmed hats, UV-protective sunglasses, and tightly woven, light-colored clothing. Dr. Heber stresses that sunscreen is not a license for unlimited sun exposure but part of a comprehensive sun safety routine.

This guidance aims to improve public awareness and reduce the risk of skin damage and cancer in Israel’s sunny climate.
