Ran Hai Moves to Arab Village to Master Arabic Through Immersion

מאת כיכר השבת, משה אריה

The story · English

Ran Hai decided to deeply learn Arabic by moving to the village of Ma'ar in northern Israel, living among Druze, Christian, and Muslim residents. He realized that classroom study and grammar books were insufficient to grasp the true spoken language, slang, and cultural nuances. In a recent episode of the podcast "The Bodecast" hosted by Moshe Aryeh, Ran shared his unconventional journey and his belief that real language learning happens through direct human interaction rather than textbooks.

Ran, who holds a bachelor's degree in Arabic linguistics and a master's in learning technologies, compared studying from books to "trying to learn swimming on dry land," emphasizing that literal translations miss the language's soul. He recounted how locals initially suspected him of being a Mossad spy or undercover officer, but after joining the local gym and engaging with the community, their suspicion turned into genuine friendship.

His passion for Arabic stems from his family heritage; his father immigrated from Baghdad, and his mother’s Iraqi cuisine and family stories inspired his connection to the language. Combining this cultural foundation with academic knowledge, Ran co-developed the "Ibenami" app, which uses voice recognition and artificial intelligence to help learners improve pronunciation while maintaining human support.

When asked about the secret to mastering Arabic, Ran stressed patience, persistence, and embracing discomfort, stating there are no shortcuts. He believes that true fluency comes from living the language daily, understanding jokes, and becoming part of the community. Ran’s story illustrates that authentic language acquisition requires stepping out of comfort zones and immersing oneself fully in the culture and everyday life.
