Syrian-Born Rabbi's Arabic Torah Lessons Attract Thousands Across Arab World
Rabbi Uri Lati, originally from Syria and now living in Brooklyn, has gained widespread attention for his Torah lessons taught in Arabic. What began as a small study session in a synagogue quickly grew into a global phenomenon, with thousands tuning in from various Arab countries, including Syria and Lebanon. Rabbi Lati shared in an interview on Kan 11 that many listeners have invited him to visit these countries, expressing surprise and gratitude for the unexpected reach of his teachings.
The initiative started almost by chance when Rabbi Lati was studying alone in a synagogue and began teaching his cousin. The lessons expanded to a group meeting at his cousin's home and eventually were shared on social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, reaching a broad international audience. His primary target audience is Arabic-speaking Jews worldwide, including communities in Brazil, Mexico, and Israel.
Rabbi Lati aims to present a different image of the Jewish people to the Arab world, emphasizing that Judaism and the Torah represent love, joy, and light. He hopes that by demonstrating adherence to Torah values, perceptions of Jews in Arab countries will shift away from negative stereotypes of violence and conflict.
Regarding the new Syrian regime's attempts to show tolerance toward Jews, Rabbi Lati expressed skepticism about returning to Syria. He believes the Jewish community has completed its chapter there and that the future of the Jewish people lies in Israel, not Syria, where only a handful of Jews remain today.
