Waze Founder Uri Levine Highlights User Pain Over AI in Startup Success

The story · English

Uri Levine, co-founder of Waze and serial entrepreneur, shared key insights on startup success and the role of AI during a discussion marking the launch of Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8. Speaking at Startup Nation Central with a group of entrepreneurs, Levine emphasized that startups must focus on the user's pain rather than the technology or initial solution. He stressed that success is measured by user retention, citing Waze's journey from its 2007 founding to achieving product-market fit only in 2011 after four years of iteration.

Levine explained that Waze's core value was helping drivers avoid traffic jams, which required reaching a critical mass of users and offering the service for free. Due to the high cost of digital maps in 2007, Waze created its own maps through crowdsourcing, a necessity that became a foundation for its global success.

On AI's impact, Levine noted that while AI accelerates development and replaces jobs involving basic cognitive tasks, it cannot truly understand user pain or make complex human decisions. He stated, "AI understands usage, it does not understand the user," highlighting that unique company data and direct user communication remain vital assets.

Levine also discussed two difficult managerial decisions: quickly releasing unsuitable employees, as fit is often clear within the first month, and maintaining sharp focus by saying "no" to distractions. He advised startups to concentrate on one product and a defined target market to succeed.

The event was hosted by Yoav Zucker, presenter of the TrashTalk podcast, and was part of Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 launch activities.

Summary: Uri Levine, Waze co-founder, advised startups to prioritize user pain and retention over technology, highlighted AI's limits in understanding users, and stressed the importance of focus and tough personnel decisions during a Samsung event in Israel.
