Maccabi Tel Aviv concluded the 2025/2026 season with a double championship, securing a 3-1 series win over Hapoel Tel Aviv and losing only three games across all competitions. The team's success is attributed to coach Oded Katash and a strong Israeli core, including standout players Tamir Blatt and Roman Sorkin, alongside key naturalized players and non-foreign Jewish athletes like TJ Leaf, Will Rayman, and John DiBartolomeo.

Shane Hunter, currently under contract with Maccabi for two more seasons, spent the recent season on loan with Legia Warsaw in Poland. Although he is not yet a finished product, Hunter showed promise as a rebounder and offensive contributor, with notable performances such as 14 points and 9 rebounds against Promitheas and a double-double versus Rytas Vilnius. However, he also faced challenges, including defensive lapses and foul trouble, and his team lost four of six games in the Basketball Champions League group stage. Hunter averaged 20 minutes per game in the Polish league, raising questions about his athleticism and ability to compete against bigger players.

Maccabi sees potential in Hunter's development under Katash, comparing his trajectory to that of Will Rayman, who was loaned to France before returning to become an influential player for Maccabi. Hunter's Israeli passport and work ethic could earn him significant minutes in the Israeli Premier League, possibly as a third center option, providing the team with roster flexibility by not requiring a foreign backup center.

The club and fans will watch closely over the next season to see if Hunter can contribute meaningfully to Maccabi's continued success and become a valuable piece in their championship puzzle.
