The story · English

Nearly 20 years after its launch, the original iPhone has lost its last ability to connect to a cellular network in the United States. T-Mobile has officially shut down its 2G GSM network, becoming the final major US carrier to retire this legacy technology. While this change will go unnoticed by most users, it has significant implications for very old devices. The first-generation iPhone, released in 2007, only supported 2G networks. Following AT&T's 2017 and Verizon's 2020 shutdowns of their 2G networks, T-Mobile's closure now completely disconnects the original iPhone from US cellular service.

This shutdown also affects older equipment such as alarm systems, payment terminals, and IoT devices that relied on 2G connectivity and were not upgraded in time. Similarly, Israel is gradually phasing out 2G and 3G networks as part of a transition to more advanced cellular technologies. The clear consequence is that older devices lacking support for newer network standards are increasingly losing their ability to connect to cellular networks.
