TV Time App to Shut Down in July 2026 Due to Insufficient Paid Demand
TV Time, a popular app used by around 25 million people to track TV shows and movies and engage in community discussions, will cease operations on July 15, 2026. The company announced the closure through in-app notifications, explaining that the cost of running the platform no longer supports offering it for free, and there was insufficient demand for a paid version. Users have been thanked for their passion and contributions, which helped build a vibrant community around the app.
Since its launch, TV Time has been downloaded over 26 million times, with nearly 29,000 new downloads in the past 30 days, according to Appfigures. The app is owned by Whip Media, which was acquired in early 2025 by investment firm Blue Torch Capital. Under new ownership, Whip Media shifted focus from sentiment analysis and content optimization based on TV Time data to AI-driven tools like Helix, aimed at improving streaming analytics and supply chain coordination.
Although TV Time’s data previously supported Whip Media’s media industry business intelligence ecosystem, the app itself was not required to be profitable as a consumer product. It remains unclear why Whip Media chose to shut down the app rather than sell it, despite its ongoing popularity. The company confirmed that all personal user data will be deleted after the app’s closure and that users can export their data in compliance with GDPR until July 15, when the app will be removed from app stores.
This closure reflects a broader trend of consumer apps shutting down amid a strategic pivot toward AI technologies, similar to Mozilla’s recent decision to close the Pocket app to focus on AI-enhanced browsing experiences with Firefox.
