Hossein Taeb Emerges as Key Link to Iran's Absent Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei
Following the assassination of Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli strike on Tehran and the appointment of his son Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran's third Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts on March 9, questions have arisen about the power structure in Iran amid Mojtaba's complete public absence. According to the Iranian constitution, the Supreme Leader holds ultimate authority over the state and armed forces, with broad powers including setting national policy and appointing senior officials. However, since his selection, Mojtaba has not appeared at any public events, official meetings, or communications, including his father’s funeral, fueling speculation about how his office operates and communicates with state institutions.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is the only senior official to publicly confirm a meeting with Mojtaba, describing their communication as "very difficult," indicating limited access even for top officials. Among influential figures, Hossein Taeb is most frequently identified as the crucial intermediary between Mojtaba and Iran’s governing bodies. Born in Tehran in 1963, Taeb studied religion in Qom before joining the Revolutionary Guards after the Iranian Revolution. He served alongside Mojtaba during the Iran-Iraq War, forging a close, decades-long relationship that has become a key security link within Iran’s power structure.
Taeb held various roles in the Revolutionary Guards and Basij militia, eventually leading the Basij and, in 2009, becoming head of the Revolutionary Guards’ Intelligence Organization amid widespread protests. Under his leadership, the intelligence service grew into Iran’s foremost internal security agency, surpassing the Ministry of Intelligence in influence. His tenure included crackdowns on the 2009 and 2019 protests, leading to US and European sanctions against him. In June 2022, Taeb was dismissed from his intelligence post, reportedly due to intelligence failures and Israeli infiltrations, but was immediately appointed advisor to the Revolutionary Guards commander, maintaining close ties to the Supreme Leader’s office.
Western research centers such as the Institute for the Study of War and the Critical Threats Project continue to describe Taeb as a prominent member of Mojtaba’s inner circle. Analysts argue that Taeb is no longer merely a security advisor but a vital conduit for transmitting the Supreme Leader’s directives to Revolutionary Guards commanders, intelligence services, and senior officials. Although Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed his role or detailed Mojtaba’s communication methods with state institutions, all available reports portray Taeb as the closest security figure to the absent Supreme Leader.
Taeb’s longstanding personal relationship with Mojtaba, his extensive experience managing Iran’s most important intelligence apparatus, and the mutual trust developed over three decades position him as the leading figure bridging the Supreme Leader and Iran’s political, security, and military decision-makers. This influence appears rooted more in personal trust and historical ties than in any formal title, underscoring the opaque nature of Iran’s current leadership dynamics amid Mojtaba Khamenei’s public absence.
