Iranian leaders are increasingly using the stablecoin USDT and cryptocurrency infrastructure to move funds abroad and evade sanctions, prompting new U.S. sanctions and international efforts to block these activities.

  • Iranian leadership uses USDT stablecoin to transfer large funds abroad without oversight.
  • Iran's advanced crypto infrastructure includes extensive Bitcoin mining and central bank adoption.
  • Cryptocurrency is central to the IRGC's economic operations to bypass Western sanctions.
  • International efforts have frozen dozens of IRGC crypto wallets to block illicit transfers.
  • U.S. Treasury recently sanctioned Iran's shadow banking and crypto trade, including UAE-based shell companies.

Senior figures in Iran's leadership have increasingly turned to digital currencies, particularly the stablecoin USDT issued by Tether, as a primary method to transfer large sums of money out of the country. This mechanism enables converting significant amounts into liquid dollars and moving them globally without regulatory oversight. The expansion of this practice relies on Iran's advanced cryptocurrency infrastructure, including extensive Bitcoin mining operations and the central bank's adoption of crypto systems.

The cryptocurrency channel has become integral to the economic activities of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in recent years, representing a coordinated Iranian effort to circumvent Western sanctions, accumulate funds abroad for future use, and conduct transactions outside Iran.

Currently, an international campaign is underway to curb Iran's use of digital currencies, with dozens of IRGC crypto wallets recently frozen. Just yesterday, the U.S. Treasury imposed new sanctions targeting Iran's shadow banking system and crypto-related trade, including two shell companies based in the United Arab Emirates.

This development comes amid ongoing tensions and diplomatic efforts involving Iran, with former U.S. President Donald Trump expressing optimism about a potential agreement despite delays, while Iran dismissed his remarks.
