Explore Jerusalem's Ancient Underground City of David for a Cool Summer Tour

The story · English

Jerusalem's City of David offers a unique underground experience, especially appealing during the hot summer months. Visitors can explore ancient tunnels and water systems carved thousands of years ago, providing both a fascinating historical journey and a refreshing escape from the heat.

A great starting point is the Beit HaSofa lookout, which offers panoramic views of the City of David, the Mount of Olives, the Kidron Valley, and the historic surroundings of ancient Jerusalem. Nearby, visitors can see the large stone remains believed to be King David's palace, excavated extensively by archaeologist Dr. Eilat Mazar about 20 years ago. Artifacts found include a distinctive stone pillar capital and olive pits dated to approximately 3,000 years ago.

The Warren's Shaft and Hezekiah's Tunnel represent an impressive ancient underground water system. Carved by the Canaanites, this secret passage allowed residents to access the vital Gihon Spring safely during sieges. Walking through the cool water-filled tunnels offers a unique and refreshing experience.

Another highlight is the Canaanite Pool, a massive rock-hewn water reservoir showcasing advanced ancient water engineering. Tradition and historical sources associate this area with King Solomon.

A recent archaeological discovery reveals the original pilgrims' road, Jerusalem's main street from about 2,000 years ago. Stretching roughly 600 meters underground from the Pool of Siloam to the foot of the Temple Mount, this road was used by thousands of pilgrims visiting the Second Temple. Visitors can walk along the original route and explore drainage channels where Jews hid from the Romans during the final days of the Great Revolt.

The City of David National Park is open Sunday through Thursday from 8:00 to 17:00, and on Fridays and holiday eves from 8:00 to 14:00. The last entry to the water system (Siloam Tunnel) is 90 minutes before closing.
