Negev Desert Festival Offers Unique Nighttime Experiences and Desert Stays in August

During August, the Negev Desert hosts the "Cool Summer Nights" festival, inviting visitors to explore the desert after sunset through overnight stays, moonlit hikes, and workshops. The festival runs every weekend from Thursday to Saturday, opening various accommodation sites and activities that showcase the Negev from a different perspective.

A highlight is the night tours in Nahal Havrarim, where the chalk canyon walls reflect moonlight, creating a magical atmosphere. Photographer Noa Brent leads mobile photography workshops here, teaching participants to capture the desert night using their phone cameras. For those seeking adventure, the Sela family’s Desert Tours offers jeep excursions to remote locations like Makhtesh Ramon, Zin Valley, and Ein Aqev spring, combining off-road driving with nature, geology, and local history insights. These air-conditioned jeep tours cost about 1,000 shekels for 2-3 hours and accommodate up to seven people.

Accommodation options include Naot Farm, established in 2003 by the Nachimov couple, featuring six cabins and 14 pipe-shaped units ranging from 9 to 140 square meters. Prices for the pipe units range from 490 to 590 shekels per night, while cabins cost between 1,200 and 1,600 shekels including breakfast. The farm also offers a bistro inside a renovated 100-year-old train car, open daily. Additional activities include Friday sunset yoga and Thursday night scorpion tours for an extra fee.

For a more authentic desert experience, Khan Nahal Havra offers stays in tents or family huts with meals and guided walks between villages, emphasizing connection with local Bedouin culture. The project "Through the Tents" is led by locals like Shtewi Abu Blaya, who shares knowledge of shepherding and desert life. Prices range from 100 shekels for a mattress in a tent to 200 shekels per person for an air-conditioned family hut, with meals available at extra cost.
