Cool Springs and Starry Nights Draw Visitors to Negev Desert in August Heat

Despite the intense August heat across Israel, the Negev Desert offers a surprisingly pleasant experience due to its dry climate, cool springs, and refreshing breezes. Visitors can enjoy air-conditioned jeep tours, nighttime temperatures that require long sleeves, and a variety of desert activities under the clear skies. This summer, the "Cool Summer Nights in the Negev" festival runs until August 22, featuring jeep tours, night photography workshops, star gazing, and cultural experiences.

The festival highlights include visits to Khan Nahal Hava, a Bedouin guesthouse offering authentic meals and workshops on desert tracking and traditional bread baking, and night hikes in Nahal Havarim canyon illuminated by moonlight. Guided tours also explore the ancient Nabatean city of Avdat, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its historic wine production, with a recently planted heritage vineyard producing natural wines.

Adventure seekers can join the "Desert Center" team for comfortable, air-conditioned jeep rides through the Ramon Crater and surrounding areas, including a stop at Ein Akav spring, a year-round water source beneath towering cliffs. Accommodations range from traditional Bedouin tents to innovative concrete tube rooms at Havat Naot farm, which also offers goat cheese production and yoga sessions.

Dining options include Bistro HaKaron, a charming eatery housed in a refurbished train car serving fresh local dairy-based dishes and wines from Negev wineries. The festival also features night tours with lanterns, scorpion spotting with ultraviolet lights, and meteor shower observations during the Perseids peak from August 11 to 15.
