Israel Reports First West Nile Virus Death Amid Rising Cases and Mosquito Spread

Israel's Ministry of Health announced the first death from West Nile virus this season, involving a man in his 70s who developed symptoms in mid-July and succumbed to complications despite medical treatment. Since the start of the season, ten cases have been confirmed nationwide, with three patients currently hospitalized in stable condition. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing to identify the locations where infected mosquitoes transmitted the virus.

For the first time this year, mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been detected in central Israel, including Tel Aviv-Yafo, Tayibe, Tira, Kalansawa, and the Lev HaSharon Regional Council. Previously, infected mosquitoes were only found in southern Israel. In response, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has instructed local authorities, especially in affected areas, to intensify prevention, monitoring, public education, and mosquito control efforts to reduce the risk of further spread.

Professor Sigal Sadetzki, head of the Public Health Division at the Ministry of Health, explained that West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites from infected birds. While most infections are mild or asymptomatic, severe symptoms such as encephalitis or meningitis can occur, particularly in people over 60 or those with underlying health conditions. Dr. Shay Reicher, director of the Pest and Pest Control Department at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, emphasized the importance of immediate local actions to minimize health risks.

The mosquito season in Israel typically lasts from June to November, with warm weather and standing water facilitating mosquito breeding. The ministries recommend draining standing water, using approved insect repellents, installing window screens, wearing long light-colored clothing during mosquito activity hours, using fans outdoors, and reporting mosquito nuisances to local authorities. Authorities will continue surveillance and control measures nationwide and update the public as the situation evolves.
