Experts Outline Quick Ways to Spot SMS and Email Scam Messages

The story · English

In recent years, there has been a significant rise in scam attempts via SMS, WhatsApp, and email, with cybercriminals impersonating banks, credit card companies, delivery services, and government agencies. Their goal is to trick victims into clicking malicious links or providing personal information. Experts say most scams can be identified within seconds by recognizing key warning signs.

One major red flag is a sense of urgency in the message, such as threats of account suspension, package returns, or immediate fines, which pressure recipients to act quickly without verifying authenticity. Suspicious links should also be scrutinized carefully; scammers often use URLs that closely resemble official sites but include extra characters, hyphens, or unusual domain extensions.

Requests for personal details like passwords, verification codes, or credit card numbers are another clear indicator of fraud, as legitimate banks and companies rarely ask for such information via SMS or email. Additionally, poor language quality, including spelling mistakes, unnatural phrasing, or awkward translations, can signal a scam, although some messages have become more sophisticated thanks to AI tools.

If you receive a suspicious message, do not click on any links or provide information. Instead, visit the official website directly or contact the company using the phone number listed on their official site. Taking a few seconds to verify can prevent financial loss and protect personal data.
